Results of Workpackage 1 - Awareness Raising, Strategy & Concept Development

Results foreseen for this Work Package are:

  • Base-line study broadband implementation in BSR rural areas
  • set up of broadband development strategies
  • implementation concepts & investment plans in participating regions
  • drafting of recommendations for broadband in regional & local development

The Baseline Studies and the regional Strategy Papers have been provided by all partners. They serve as input for the Broadband Compendium, which ist a major output of the project. The studies are in most partner regions subject to political approval processes, which turned out to be quite time consuming in some cases. However, the structure of the study is prepared and first chapters have been compiled.

One major event for raising the awareness for the need of broadband access in rural areas was the conference “1st International Lower Saxonian Broadbanddays” that took place in May 2006 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck (Germany).

In Denmark a professional institution for implementing the pilot project, raising the awareness of the inhabitants, suppliers and decision makers was drafted during the first months of the project and has been founded in the second half of 2006. For the Norwegian partners the “Broadband Forum for Rogaland” was established to support project implementation on regional level.

In Osterholz (Germany) a draft for a regional Broadband Competence Centre has been drawn up during in 2006. This competence centre will provide the region of Osterholz as well as other regions in Lower Saxony, Germany and trans-national partner regions with know-how and support concerning broadband access in rural areas. The inauguration is planned in 2007.

Also in Osterholz additional funds have been searched for. The region supported the City of Osterholz-Scharmbeck in the T-City competetion of the German Telekom, promising 1.3 Million € for the winner of this competition. Osterholz-Scharmbeck did not win the first prize; however, there will be a considerable amount for implementing one or two smaller projects on local level.
